How to Get Started
1. Ask About Any Animal
Wonder what lions eat? Type the animal's name — or just say it. Voice input is made for small explorers who can't read or type yet, and the panda mascot is always one tap away. Silly questions are welcome too: ask what Grandma eats and get a playful, clearly marked on-device AI answer.
2. See What's on the Menu
Every answer is a friendly list of foods, each with its own lovely illustration and simple words — and the app reads everything out loud for pre-readers. Foods that are themselves animals are tappable, so your child can hop along the food chain from lion to zebra to grass and keep exploring as deep as their curiosity goes.
3. Collect Your Discoveries
Every animal your child looks up lands in their personal discovery gallery — a collectible grid that fills up with each new find and invites them back tomorrow. Everything is stored only on your device: the app works completely offline, with no ads, no tracking, and a parental gate in front of the settings.

What age is the app for?
What do … eat? is designed for children aged roughly 3 to 8. Kids who can't read yet can use it fully on their own: they can ask by voice instead of typing, every food is shown as a picture, and every answer can be read out loud.
Where do the animal facts come from?
The app ships with a curated set of built-in animals, each with a simple list of the foods it really eats, shown most-iconic first. The diets are deliberately simplified so young children can understand them — it's a learning experience, not a scientific reference. These answers are bundled with the app rather than generated on the fly, and we review and refine them with every update.
What happens if we ask about an animal that isn't built in?
On devices that support Apple Intelligence, the app generates a playful answer using on-device AI — and marks it clearly as AI-generated, right in the answer. These answers are intentionally lighthearted and can occasionally be inaccurate or incomplete; that's exactly why they're marked. On devices without Apple Intelligence, the app shows a friendly message instead. The built-in animals work on every device.
Can we ask what Grandma eats?
Yes! Asking about family members is a deliberate, much-loved feature. "What does Grandma eat?" gets a warm, silly, clearly marked AI answer — cake and cookies tend to feature heavily.
Does the app need an internet connection?
No. Everything — the animal facts, the pictures, the read-aloud voice, and even the AI answers — happens on your device. The app works completely offline.
Is my child's data safe?
Yes. The app does not collect, store, or transmit any personal data. There are no accounts, no ads, no analytics, and no third-party software. Searches and discovered animals are stored only on your device and disappear if you delete the app.
How does voice input work? Is it private?
Voice input uses Apple's built-in speech recognition to turn your child's words into a search. On devices that support it, recognition runs entirely on the device. We never receive or store any audio.
Why does the app ask a math question before opening Settings?
That's the parental gate — a small multiplication task that young children can't solve. It keeps kids inside the safe part of the app and away from settings and external links, as recommended for kids' apps.
Can I remove an animal from the discovery gallery?
Yes. Discoveries that came from AI answers appear under "More discoveries" in the gallery — touch and hold one to delete it. This also removes its cached answer.
Who's behind the app?
What do … eat? is a family project, made by parents for parents: built by a dad, co-run by a mom, and play-tested by our own son. The no-ads, no-tracking, parental-gate choices aren't a compliance checklist — they're simply how we wanted a kids' app to be for our own child.
How much does the app cost?
What do … eat? is free. There are no in-app purchases, no subscriptions, and no ads.
Which languages does it support?
English and German — including the animal names, the food lists, voice input, and the read-aloud voice. More languages may follow.
Does it work on iPad?
Yes. What do … eat? works on both iPhone and iPad.
