Terms of Service

Effective date: July 22, 2026

Acceptance

The Service is operated by Hopworks UG (haftungsbeschränkt), the company behind What do … eat?, with its registered address at Franz-Joseph-Str. 11, 80801 München, Germany. By using the app and website (the "Service"), you agree to these Terms. If you obtain the app from Apple's App Store, you also agree to Apple's Licensed Application End User License Agreement ("Standard EULA"). Where the Standard EULA applies (for example, installation and use on Apple devices), it governs alongside these Terms. If there is a conflict for App Store–distributed copies, the Standard EULA controls. See: Apple Standard EULA.

If you are a parent or guardian and let your child use the app, you accept these Terms on their behalf and are responsible for their use of the app.

License and App Store Terms

Apps distributed via the App Store are licensed, not sold.
You receive a non‑transferable, limited license to use the app on Apple‑branded devices you own or control, subject to Apple's Usage Rules.
You may not redistribute, sublicense, reverse‑engineer, disassemble, attempt to derive the source code of, modify, or create derivative works of the app or updates, except where such restrictions are prohibited by law.
We and/or Apple reserve all rights not expressly granted.
The app is currently available only via Apple's App Store. For App Store copies, Apple's Standard EULA applies in full and controls if these Terms conflict.

Price

The app is free. There are no in‑app purchases, no subscriptions, and no advertising. There are no accounts to create, and the app does not collect any personal data (see our Privacy Policy).

Educational Content

The app is an educational experience for young children, not a scientific reference. Animal diets are curated and simplified so they are friendly and understandable for kids; they are provided for learning and entertainment only.
For animals and questions outside the built‑in set, answers may be generated by an on‑device AI model. These answers are always clearly marked in the app, are intentionally playful (asking what Grandma eats is a feature), and may be inaccurate or incomplete.
Nothing in the app constitutes advice of any kind, including dietary advice for humans or for the care and feeding of real animals or pets.

Parental Gate

Settings and any surfaces that could lead outside the child experience sit behind a parental gate intended for adults. Please don't help children past it — it exists to keep the app safe for them.

Acceptable Use

You agree not to misuse the Service. Prohibited behavior includes (without limitation):

Breaking laws or regulations
Infringing copyrights or other rights
Attempting to hack, disrupt, or degrade the Service or others' use of it

Privacy and Data

The app does not collect, store, or transmit any personal data. All processing happens on your device, and content your child looks up (including the discovery gallery) is stored only on the device. See our Privacy Policy for details.

Intellectual Property

We retain all rights in the Service, including the software, design, illustrations, and content we provide. The app does not accept or host user‑generated content.

Termination

You may stop using the Service at any time; deleting the app removes all locally stored content. We may suspend or terminate access if you violate these Terms or if required by law. Upon termination, sections that by their nature should survive (including Disclaimers and Limitation of Liability) will remain in effect.

Disclaimers

THE SERVICE IS PROVIDED "AS IS" AND "AS AVAILABLE." TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, WE DISCLAIM ALL WARRANTIES, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, ACCURACY, QUIET ENJOYMENT, AND NON‑INFRINGEMENT. WE DO NOT GUARANTEE THAT THE SERVICE WILL BE ERROR‑FREE OR THAT ALL CONTENT IS FREE OF INACCURACIES.

Limitation of Liability

TO THE EXTENT NOT PROHIBITED BY LAW, WE SHALL NOT BE LIABLE FOR INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, OR EXEMPLARY DAMAGES (INCLUDING LOSS OF PROFITS, DATA, OR BUSINESS). TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, OUR TOTAL LIABILITY FOR ALL CLAIMS RELATING TO THE SERVICE SHALL NOT EXCEED FIFTY U.S. DOLLARS (US $50).

Consumer Rights

Nothing in these Terms is intended to exclude or limit rights you may have under applicable consumer‑protection laws that cannot be excluded or limited by contract. The Disclaimers and Limitation of Liability apply only to the extent permitted by law in your jurisdiction.

Export and Compliance

You agree to comply with applicable export and sanctions laws. You represent that you are not in an embargoed country and are not on a prohibited list.

U.S. Government End Users

The app and related documentation are "Commercial Items," consisting of "Commercial Computer Software" and "Commercial Computer Software Documentation" as those terms are used in applicable acquisition regulations. They are licensed to U.S. Government end users (a) only as Commercial Items and (b) with only those rights granted to all other end users under these Terms.

Governing Law and Jurisdiction (App Store copies)

For copies obtained via Apple's App Store, and to the extent required by Apple's Standard EULA, California law governs (excluding its conflicts‑of‑law rules) and courts located in Santa Clara County, California shall have jurisdiction. If you are a resident of the European Union, Switzerland, Norway, or Iceland, the governing law and forum shall be the laws and courts of your usual place of residence. The United Nations Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods does not apply.

Changes to These Terms

We may update these Terms from time to time. If changes are material, we will provide reasonable notice (for example, in‑app or on our site). Your continued use of the Service after changes become effective constitutes acceptance.
